Welcome

Hi, thanks for coming to my blog. I am a photographer based in central New Jersey, specializing in portraiture, lifestyle and of course- weddings. Like most wedding photographer blogs, this will be a place to show some images from weddings and engagement sessions, as well as a source of general information on photography. Please leave comments, email feedback, recipes, favorite movies, whatever. Looking forward to hearing from you.

I Love making pictures.

Taraja Pt2: Color

In my previous post I showed some of the selects from the black and white film part of the bridal session.  In this post I’m showing some of the color work that we did.

Taraja Pt1: The film series

As I said in my previous post,  I love shooting film, especially black and white.  I normally shoot medium format (6×6) and now large format (4×5) as well. Film is expensive to process, so I develop the black and white film myself.  I send the color negatives to a lab.  The images below are all large format images taken with a Toyo view camera.  There is a quality about photographs taken with negatives that size that is wonderful to see.  Especially in black and white where the transitions from deep blacks to lightest grays are so smooth.  Anyway enough of my babbling.  If you are a bride and interested in having a film session with me, please email me at info@shermancharlesweddings.com .

Preview: Taraja’s Bridal Session

We had a great bridal session with Taraja today.  Francis and Taraja are some good friends who recently got married this past summer.  Taraja and I scheduled a bridal session some time ago and we were able to do it today.  For this session I shot with both digital and my 4×5 large format film camera.  For those who may not know, large format film cameras use negatives starting from 4×5 inches and up.  Not only can you get a ridiculously large, high quality enlargement from that – but the image itself  has a beauty, tonality and detail that you just can’t get from a 35mm camera – digital or film.

As for using film – well I use film only for my personal projects.  Especially working with large format, the process is entirely different from digital.  It’s slower and more purposeful.  There is no rush.  The film is not cheap and in the case of black and white film, is developed by hand.  I’ve been shooting and developing my own black and white film for a while.  Here is a preview of a shot taken today on black and white film.
